  3. Marilyn Monroe

Why is society so obsessed with Marilyn Monroe, especially among young teenage girls. I bet a majority of the population who says they love Marilyn Monroe has never seen any of her films. I personally have never seen any of her films, but I did read a biography about her. I often find myself getting happy when I see pictures of her or references to her pop up, and I really don’t understand why.

  4. My little political spiel…

Isn’t it amazing how millions of people signed the petition to stop SOPA and PIPA? How much do you want to bet most of those people were young adults between the ages of 18-25? I fit into this category, and I did sign that petition. But my question is this: why do millions of people jump to sign a petition about the internet, but they don’t show up to vote? Why don’t people in that category care about politics? This is not a rhetorical question, because I don’t have an answer. I would really like to know why my peers don’t seem to give a shit.

Everything that politicians do affects us, but why do people only care when it can affect their Facebook and Twitter usage? Why didn’t they care when President Obama passed the National Defense Authorization Act, which gave the federal government the power to indefinitely detain suspects of terrorism? The NDAA also authorizes the military to detain American citizens without a trial. This means that Obama, or any future president, can throw a citizen into prison for life without charges or a trial. I find it amazing that no one seems to care about this. The NDAA is possibly the worst piece of legislation in the history of the United States. To make matters worse, the man who signed it is the same man whose 2008 campaign gave people hope and made them believe that he would truly make things better in our nation. He and his administration have done many things these past three and a half years, but now, at least for me, those things are overshadowed by that monstrosity he signed called the NDAA.

But it’s too late to stop the NDAA from getting passed now. I just wish a quarter of the people who signed the petition to stop SOPA and PIPA would sign that quickly when it comes to other issues. I’m not asking you to become a political activist. I’m just asking you be politically informed. Everyday, hundredsof bills are presented to Congress in the hopes of getting passed, one of those is bound to mean something to you. I urge you to stand up for what you believe in, because if you don’t stand up for your beliefs, no one is going to do it for you.

I know that speaking up is hard (even more so now with the fear of being detained indefinitely with trial or charge looming over our shoulders), but imagine how hard it is to speak up after you’ve been the victim of a sex crime. Imagine how hard it is to have to identify the person who assaulted you. Imagine how hard it is to have to live with the fact your assailant walks free because of a huge backlog in rape kits. We can help to minimize the huge backlog of rape kits simply by signing this petition to pass the SAFER Act (Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence Registry). If passed, this will help eliminate the huge backlog of rape kits, let victims track the status of their case, and many other things.

As a victim of child molestation, this cause is near and dear to my heart. I know exactly who my assailant is, and yet, he walks free.  The fact that he walks free wouldn’t bother me so much if rehabilitation had worked. But I have recently found out that it didn’t, and he now has other victims. I can not forget what happened to me, I can only hope that it doesn’t happen to others. And I will do everything to prevent a sex crime offender from walking free because of a huge rape kit backlog. It is not fair to sex crime victims that their assailants go unpunished for their horrible crimes. I know that there have a few cases where innocent people have been charged and incarcerated for sex crimes. If there was more funding for process rape kits, this would happen less often. Now, the SAFER Act currently doesn’t mention anything about generating funds for the processing of rape kits, but signing the SAFER Act can be the first step towards that.

Please consider signing this. It is very important, and sex crime victims need to have that part of their lives to be complete so that they can move on and live healthy lives without that terrible burden on their shoulders.

If you sign this, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart on behalf of all sex crime victims everywhere.
